UNI MEI supports Korean media workers’ strike to protect media independence Brussels, 13 April 2010 UNI Global Union and its media sector, UNI MEI, representing over 140 media and entertainment unions worldwide, are standing in solidarity with NUMW and MBCTV unions and their colleagues who have been on strike since April 5 to protest MBC TV management’s refusal to engage in dialogue with workers to ensure editorial independence. MBC TV union’s decision for the strike was taken as the last resort after new president Kim Jae-Chol’s broke his promise to the union and reshuffled the management team. About 900 union members in Seoul and all other cities in South Korea have joined the historical strike to protest the government’s intention to control MBC TV through appointment of government-friendly CEOs and senior managers. The union called for newly appointed MBC TV President Kim Jae-Chol and Vice-President Hwang Hee-Man, to step down. The workers believe the management team not qualified to protect the station’s neutrality due to its close connection with the government. UNI Global Union fully supports the Korean Media Workers union’s call for the resignation of Kim Jae-Chol and Hwang Hee-Man. UNI MEI applauds the continuous efforts of its affiliate, the National Media Workers’ Union (NUMW) and its sister organisations who are fighting together for media pluralism and editorial independence. MBC TV 노조 파업 사태에 대한 UNI-MEI의 지지 성명서 한글번역"UNI MEI는 한국 언론노동자의 미디어 독립을 위한 파업투쟁을 적극지지한다"UNI 글로벌 유니온과 미디어 부문 가맹조직은, 전세계 140개의 미디어 및 엔터테인먼트 노조를 대표하여, 편집의 독립성을 요구하는 노동조합과 대화를 거절하는 MBC TV 경영진에 항의하여 4월5일부터 파업에 돌입하여 투쟁하고 있는 MBCTV 노조원과 이를 지지하는 언론노조에 국제연대를 보냅니다. 이번 MBCTV 노조의 파업결정은 신임 김재철 사장의 노조와의 약속을 깨고 일방적으로 단행한 임원 조직개편이 있은 후 최후의 수단으로 내려진 것입니다. 서울과 다른 주요 도시에 있는 900여명의 노조원이 친정부적인 CEO 와 경영진을 임명하여 MBCTV를 장악하려는 정부의 의도에 저항하여 벌이는 역사적인 파업에 동참하고 있습니다. 노조는 신임 김재철 사장과 황희만 부사장의 퇴진을요구합니다. 노조원들은 이 경영진이 정부와 긴밀한 유착관계로 인하여 방송국의 중립성을 지킬 수 없다고 믿기 때문입니다. UNI 글로벌 유니온은 언론노조 산하 MBC TV 노조가 주장하는 김재철사장과 황희만 부사장의 퇴진운동을 지지합니다. UNI MEI는 이밖에도 미디어의 다양성과 편집의 독립성을 위해 싸우고 있는 언론노조와 산하조직의 지속적인 노력에 경의를 표하고자 합니다.** 이 성명서는 최시중 방송통신위원장과 청와대, 그리고 전세계140개 UNI MEI 소속 노조에 보내졌습니다.
